Family Therapy

Understanding each other, strengthening family connections

Family relationships can be a source of comfort, strength, and belonging, but they can also become difficult when communication breaks down or when family members are facing stress, conflict, or significant change. Family therapy at SteadyMind Therapy offers a safe, confidential space to explore these challenges together and work towards healthier, more supportive relationships.

Therapy can help family members express their thoughts and feelings, listen to one another with greater understanding, and recognise patterns that may be contributing to tension. It may be helpful when families are experiencing ongoing conflict, difficulties communicating, separation or loss, changes in family circumstances, parenting concerns, or emotional and behavioural challenges affecting one or more family members.

The focus of family therapy is on the relationships and patterns within the family, rather than placing blame on one individual. Each person’s experience is valued, and sessions are guided with respect, compassion, and sensitivity to the family’s unique circumstances.

Family therapy can support you to:

  • Improve communication and mutual understanding.

  • Manage conflict in more constructive ways.

  • Strengthen trust, connection, and cooperation.

  • Adjust to changes or challenging life events.

  • Develop healthier ways of supporting one another.

Seeking support does not mean that your family has failed. It can be a positive step towards creating greater understanding, emotional safety, and connection within your relationships.

If your family is experiencing difficulties, get in touch to arrange an initial conversation about how family therapy may help.

Family Therapy: What to Expect

Free 15-minute consultation

A family member can reach out to us. We offer a 15-minute consultation call to answer questions, understand the main concerns, explain our approach, and see whether we’re a good fit for your family.

First session — joint assessment

Your first session is an opportunity for your therapist to understand your family’s history, challenges you’re currently facing, and what you hope to achieve with therapy. This is an exploratory, non-judgmental conversation. Each person present is invited to share their view of what’s happening and what they’d like to be different. Your therapist will listen carefully to understand relational patterns at play, and, together with your family, begin to agree on specific goals for therapy.

Ongoing Sessions

Ongoing sessions help the family practice new ways of relating through structured conversations, exercises to improve listening and problem-solving, and small tasks to try at home. Your therapist stays neutral and does not take sides; the focus is on changing patterns, not blaming individuals.

Frequency and duration

Family therapy sessions are typically 60–90 minutes, reflecting the complexity and number of people involved. Sessions often take place biweekly, giving families time to integrate what is explored between sessions. Duration varies from one family to another — some families find significant benefit within 6–12 sessions; others engage in longer-term therapy. Your therapist will review progress regularly and adapt the approach as your family’s needs evolve.
